Every Day Is Exactly the Same Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I believe I can see the future
'Cause I repeat the same routine
I think I used to have a purpose
Then again, that might have been a dream

I think I used to have a voice
Now I never make a sound

I just do what I've been told
I really don't want them to come around, oh no

[Chorus]
Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same

[Verse 2]
I can feel their eyes are watching
In case I lose myself again

Sometimes I think I'm happy here (Sometimes)
Sometimes, yet I still pretend

I can't remember how this got started
Oh, but I can tell you exactly how it will end

[Chorus]
Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same
[Bridge]
I'm writing on a little piece of paper
I'm hoping someday you might find
Well I'll hide it behind something
They won't look behind

I am still inside here, oh
A little bit comes bleeding through
I wish this could've been any other way, oh
But I just don't know, I don't know what else I can do

[Chorus]
Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain (Every day)
Every day is exactly the same (Exactly the same, every day)
Every day is exactly the same (Every day)
Every day is exactly the same (There is no pain)
There is no love here and there is no pain (Every day)
Every day is exactly the same (Every day is the same)

About

Genius Annotation

“Every Day Is Exactly the Same” was the third of the three successful singles released from With Teeth, Nine Inch Nails' fourth studio album. The song reached the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart and was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 2007 Grammy Awards, but lost to “Woman” by Wolfmother. In the Nine Inch Nails discography it is known as Halo 21.

The song seems to be about the cycle of medication and deadened creativity that comes with depression and mental illness. He knows he’s going to be happy, then sad, then feel dead inside, then maybe for a bit feel loved, but inevitably the cycle is going to repeat. All the while, his support structure are constantly on him to stay on track, which he hates.

It is also notable that the drums (performed by Dave Grohl) are quite similar to the drum track to “My Hero”, also performed by Grohl.
