I Constantly Thank God for Esteban Lyrics
Give us this day our daily dose of faux affliction
Forgive our sins, forged at the pulpit
With forked tongues selling faux sermons
Because I am a new-wave gospel sharp, and you'll be thy witness
So, gentlemen, if you're gonna preach
For God sakes, preach with conviction!
[Chorus]
Strike up the band! Whoa-oh, the conductor is beckoning
Come, congregation, let's sing it like you mean it
No, don't you get it? Don't you get it? Now, don't you move
Strike up the band! Whoa-oh, the conductor is beckoning
Come, congregation, let's sing it like you mean it
No, don't you get it? Don't you get it? Now, don't you move
[Post-Chorus]
Just stay where I can see you, douse the lights!
...We sure are in for a show tonight!
[Verse 2]
In this little number, we're graced by two displays of character
We've got the gunslinger extraordinaire, a walking contradiction
And I, for one, can see no blood
From the hearts and the wrists you allegedly slit
And I, for one, won't stand for this
If this scene were a parish, you'd all be condemned
Strike up the band! Whoa-oh, the conductor is beckoning
Come, congregation, let's sing it like you mean it
No, don't you get it? Don't you get it? Now, don't you move
Strike up the band! Whoa-oh, the conductor is beckoning
Come, congregation, let's sing it like you mean it
No, don't you get it? Don't you get it? Now, don't you move
[Bridge]
Just stay where I can see you, douse the lights
...We sure are in for a show tonight!
Just stay where I can see you, douse the lights!
...We sure are in for a show tonight!
Stay where I can see you, douse the lights!
[Chorus]
Strike up the band! Whoa-oh, the conductor is beckoning
Come, congregation, let's sing it like you mean it
No, don't you get it? Don't you get it? Now, don't you move
Strike up the band! Whoa-oh, the conductor is beckoning
Come, congregation, let's sing it like you mean it
No, don't you get it? Don't you get it? Now, don't you move
Don't you move, don't you move... strike up the band!
About
“I Constantly Thank God For Esteban” is a statement about hypocrites and liars, disguised as a criticism of religion. The second half of the first verse reveals the deeper meaning behind the lyrics — rather than the track being all about religious institutions, the group exposes how hypocritical people really are. A similar idea is explored earlier in the album, specifically in the second verse of “The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage.”
The title was inspired by an infomercial for Esteban Guitars, which was revealed by Brendon in a Billboard piece about the Fever album.

Brendon Urie told Billboard:
A lot of the bands in the scene were doing cool stuff [with song titles,] so we took it a step further. Nobody had song titles that were as long as ours. A lot of it was just inside jokes. The song ‘I Constantly Thank God for Esteban’ was from an infomercial for these guitars. It’s such a shitty infomercial – a lady on there has one of the guitars and she’s like, ‘I constantly thank god for Esteban!’ So we wrote this song with Latin flavor, like, ‘F— yeah, we’re using that.’
