Genius Annotation

Credited to Phish frontman Trey Anastasio and his longtime friend Steve Pollak (aka The Dude of Life), “Dinner and a Movie” would not exactly get credit as a lyrical tour de force. The song first appears in Phish live setlists on November 19, 1987, becoming a regular part of the repertoire through 1992. Iconic versions of the song were played with The Giant Country Horns during a 1991 tour, adding additional layers of instrumentation that don’t exist in the studio version.

It has since become a true rarity and has made a few noteworthy appearances as such. Perhaps the most infamous of these occurred after a more-than-three-year hiatus, when “Dinner and a Movie” returned from obscurity to open a second set in Las Vegas that would ultimately feature a divisive guest appearance by Kid Rock.
