Coming Back to Life Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Where were you
When I was burned and broken?
While the days slipped by from my window, watching
And where were you
When I was hurt and I was helpless?
‘Cause the things you say
And the things you do surround me
While you were hanging yourself on someone else’s words
Dying to believe in what you heard
I was staring straight into the shining sun

[Verse 2]
Lost in thought and lost in time
While the seeds of life
And the seeds of change were planted
Outside, the rain fell dark and slow
While I pondered on this dangerous but irresistible pastime

[Chorus]
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the moment had arrived for killing the past
And coming back to life

[Guitar Solo]
[Chorus]
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the waiting had begun
And headed straight into the shining sun

[Guitar Solo]

About

Genius Annotation

Possibly the finest moment on The Division Bell, “Coming Back To The Life” is about as personal a piece as Gilmour has ever turned out. It possibly refers to the personal consequences of Floyd’s late Eighties Momentary Lapse Or Reason tour, and his renewed joie de vivre from his relationship with Polly Samson.

Interestingly, the piece features not one or two, but three guitar solos from Gilmour. Each solo grows in intensity. The first, on a clean electric guitar is poignant and soulful. The second gives the impression of a growing sense of hope. The final solo is as close to unadulterated joy that has ever been recorded on a Floyd album.

It is an odd piece for Floyd, in that its outlook is unabashedly positive. The tones that Gilmour achieves seem to be intentionally different from the languid trebly wails he is known for, while remaining classic Gilmour.
