Genius Annotation

The band’s second major hit from 1967, clearly establishing in the forefront of the progressive rock scene. The song’s tune preceded the lyrics; Keith Reid heard the somehow Spanish nuance in the tune and decided to write lyrics to fit the scene.

This is one of the rare occasions that the lyricist, an official member of the band, does not play any instruments nor sings.

The lyrics are multilayered, full with metaphors with allusion to many 60’s themes (war, drugs) and personal relations.

The original version was included in the band’s debut album, Procol Harum).

Later, an orchestral version was the centerpiece of their live album, Procol Harum Live: In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
