About
Genius Annotation
This song was written by Dee Dee Ramone about growing up in Germany and being bullied. His father was an American soldier and his mother was a German woman. Dee Dee had a fascination with the Nazi memorabilia he would find in the German rubble.
Seymour Stein, who signed the band to Sire Records, and Sire Records wanted the Ramones to change the lyrics to the song because they thought it was too offensive to call oneself a Nazi.
See this.
Dee Dee was also bullied when he moved to the US for being of German descent as discussed in the documentary, End of the Century.
