Warm Tape Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Shiver for me, girl
Deliver for me, my darling
Ah, pushing up to you
A river that runs right through you
Swim for your smile in a Blue Rock Quarry
Make it for me, baby, you won't be sorry

Shiver for me now
Deliver for me, my darling

[Chorus]
Miles and miles of nether worlds I roam
Settle for love you never far from home
Carry me down into the waters of
Carry me down into the water of love

Two of us were made of angel's dust
I've been around, but not around enough

[Verse 2]
Shadow my free form
A woman that I could keep warm
Quiver for me, girl
Give me your head and shoulders
Shot from the pages of love and glory
Sleeping next to you and I'm in your story
Shadow my free form
A woman that I could keep warm
[Chorus]
Miles and miles of nether worlds I roam
Settle for love I'm never far from home
Carry me down into the waters of
Carry me down into the water of love
Two of us were made of angel's dust
I've been around, but not around enough

[Bridge]
Let's go
I know I make it for two
Intuition's only what you take from it
I know I make it for two
You were there and I was fortunate
I know I make it for two
Messy bed a part of cheating I won't fall for you
I know I make it for two, I make it for two, I make it for two and

[Verse 3]
Shiver for me now
Deliver for me, my darling
A living that I could
Be giving to you, my sweet love
Swim for your smile in a Blue Rock Quarry
Make it for me, baby, you won't be sorry

Shot from the pages of love and glory
Sleeping next to you and I'm in your dreams
[Outro]
Settle for love
Settle for love
Settle for love

About

Genius Annotation

The lyrical themes and musical style of By the Way mark a significant digression from the signature funk-driven sound of previous Red Hot Chili Peppers albums. Continuing this influence, “Warm Tape” is a dreamy, atmospheric song that lingers upon the many emotions exhibited when falling in love.

In contrast to the band’s typically guitar and bass guitar heavy tracks, “Warm Tape” was written entirely on a keyboard synthesizer at rehearsals. In the track-by-track album commentary, guitarist John Frusciante revealed that the song title directly references this:

The words “warm tape” came from the name of one of the [sounds effects] that I used to combine with a synthesizer sound.

The warmth implied by the title may also suggest that this song was not digitally recorded—with analogue recording methods, “tape warmth” softens musical notes and increases lower frequencies to add a degree of color to the sound.

What did Red Hot Chili Peppers say about "Warm Tape"?
Genius Answer

In the track-by-track album commentary, guitarist John Frusciante explained the song’s writing process and musical influence:

Originally [“Warm Tape”] had a punk rock part that went out of the verse into a downstroke punk thing, and [producer] Rick Rubin didn’t think that it was as good as the rest of the song […] I kept trying to write parts for that song on guitar, but everybody thought it would be a good idea to have the synthesizer at the verse, and guitar at the chorus […] Finally, something was written that did seem better than the punk rock part.

Even though I’ve heard people say that the song is ‘80’s influenced or something, to me it doesn’t seem that way at all—it seems very '60’s influenced.
