Genius Annotation

Hrafntinna is the Icelandic word for “obsidian”. According to Geology.com, obsidian “is an igneous rock that forms when molten rock material cools so rapidly that atoms are unable to arrange themselves into a crystalline structure”, which is an explanation of how molten rock can turn into black, volcanic glass as opposed to a crystalline rock.

Iceland is a northern mid-Atlantic ridge island with 30 active volcanoes. This song is a poetic depiction of how volcanic glass is formed, and, if you like, a commentary on rebirth.
