For God and Country Lyrics

I want to live for God and country
I want to give for God and country

It’s too late for some
It’s too late for what you’ve done
I can’t help what i divide in you

For God and country i’ll fight
For God and country i’ll die
For God and country my soul is so alive
My soul is so alive
Lay down your arms to me
Lay down your arms for God and country

I want to live where no one’s watching my way home
I want to give until i’m bursting with unknown

It’s too late for some
It’s too late for everyone
I can’t help what i destroy in you

Well who needs this anymore?
C’mon make it so
That’s when they build their cross of death
You won’t build your own
It’s time to wake up!
It’s time to wake up for good
I can’t help you though i should

For God and country we’ll fight
For God and country we’ll die
For God and country my soul is so alive
My soul is so alive
Lay down your arms to me
Lay down your arms for God and country

You can’t deny God and country
We’re fighting for our lives
You can’t deny God and country
Our souls are so aligned
In this time of God and country
We’ll take you on our side
It’s alright

My soul is so alive
With God and night
With God and country
My soul is so alive

About

Genius Annotation

Corgan described the original idea behind this song as “a funerary ‘there goes our country’ sort of thing.” After Corgan literally found himself falling asleep during a recording session, they changed the musical direction. While Roy Thomas Baker didn’t produce this particular song, it was said that he loved the final result in the way that it incorporated the “disco bass” vibe with modern rock.

Lyrically, this song is somewhat sarcastic. Corgan made a strong statement about U.S. politics while describing the track:

It’s not political in the sense that I want anyone to think anything, it’s political in the sense that I feel I’m drowning in a bunch of crap. I don’t know what to do or say about it other than it’s part of my daily life now.

Genius Answer

Billy Corgan via XM Artist Confidential:

I’ve avoided politics as I believe politics are for fools. Our political system is basically set up as a shell game. I believe these people go behind the scenes, shake hands at the country club, then get out in front of the cameras and pretend their either on the red team or the blue team. That’s been going on for years. But when it becomes dangerous to the future of our country, I suddenly find myself having an opinion that I can’t suppress.

I’ve always commented on my environment. I have to comment on this.
