Neverlost Lyrics

All hands on deck
Setting sail to get wrecked off course
You make what you want of me
I will keep you anyway

Let’s fill these hours and kill desire
Let’s fill these hours and kill desire
I’m in touch with you
Let’s kill these hours and fill desire

Every turn is torture thought
Every kicking of the drum

I’ve seen the film
I know the place
I’m never lost
There’s just one way across

I’m never lost

Headlights shoot north
The ends of earth off course
Of course

If you think just right
If you’ll love you’ll find
Certain truths left behind
All this is that once forgot
A closing down of the gate

But oh these hours
I lost my place
I’m never lost
There’s just one way

There’s no disgrace in failing me
Let’s kill these hours and fill desire
I’m in touch with you
Let’s kill these hours and fill desire
I’m in touch with you
I’m in touch with you

About

Genius Annotation

It just wouldn’t be a Pumpkins album without a track like this to act as a soothing counterbalance.“Neverlost” is placed right in the middle of Zeitgeist, almost acting as an interlude. This album is undeniably an effort of heavy rock as can be seen in the previous song, “United States.”

While the title as well as some of the lyrics suggest the narrator has never found himself off his course, other lyrics such as “I lost my place” stand as a contradiction. There is some evidence of a connection to Emily Dickinson in these lines. Not only does Corgan’s writing seem to suggest the style of Dickinson, the title is very reminiscent of poems such as “Who never lost, are unprepared.”

What did The Smashing Pumpkins say about "Neverlost"?
Genius Answer

Billy Corgan via XM Artist Confidential:

We were set to break for Christmas of ‘05. The sun was going down which is usually when we’d stop. We were done and about to go home. Jimmy was leaving that night and looking at me like, 'If we’re good I need to get out of here.’ I said, ‘Let’s just try one more idea.’ I started playing [the main riff]. Ten minutes later, we had this song. That’s the power of the Zen moment, of believing that moment is there. I think this is a reflection of that moment.
