About

Genius Annotation

This song’s lyrics were written after a conversation with Dave Markey about the SST Superstore, an independent record store in Los Angeles. Markey is a movie director famous for 1991: The Year Punk Broke and many music videos for underground bands (including Sonic Youth and Black Flag).

By the time Experimental Jet Set… came out, it was already their third album on a major label, and here they seem to be longing for their time as underground artists, releasing albums through SST records.

Throughout the song, the band name-drops a few of the bands, persons and records that made their underground music “society” of the 1980s great.
