Call It Off Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I won't regret saying this
This thing that I'm saying
Is it better than keeping my mouth shut?
That goes without saying

[Pre-Chorus]
Call, break it off
Call, break my own heart

[Chorus]
Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at
Maybe you would have been something I'd be good at

But now we'll never know
I won't be sad
But in case, I'll go there everyday
To make myself feel bad
There's a chance I'll start to wonder
If this was the thing to do

[Verse 2]
I won't be out long
But I still think it better if
You take your time coming over here
I think that's for the best
[Pre-Chorus]
Call, break it off
Call, break my own heart

[Chorus]
Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at
Maybe you would have been something I'd be good at
But now we'll never know
I won't be sad
But in case, I'll go there everyday
To make myself feel bad
There's a chance I'll start to wonder
If this was the thing to do
I'll start to wonder
If this was the thing to do

Genius Annotation

Tegan Quin wrote “Call It Off” about Lindsey. In 2004, Tegan was lonely on tour when she met Lindsey, who was selling merch for the band they were touring with. Tegan tried to woo the girl into going out with her, but nothing worked. For the next three years, she kept trying. Tegan in all of her sadness wrote a bunch of songs that she put into the album The Con.

Months passed. Lindsey was working on the set of the music video shoot for “Call it Off”. As the video was being shot, Lindsey had found out from a band mate that the song was written about her. Hearing this and watching Tegan sing the song to the camera was enough to turn Lindsey. Seeing the emotion that Tegan expressed made her realize that Tegan was serious. After the video shoot was over, Tegan tried to make a hasty retreat, embarrassed being around the girl who she had chased for four years, but Lindsey stopped Tegan and asked her out for coffee. And now, they are married.
