Genius Annotation

The title track of the album and film of the same name, “Help!” was released in 1965 as a single, and eventually ranked No. 29 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

Primarily written by John Lennon, the song comments on his feelings about Beatlemania, as revealed on 1995’s Anthology. Lennon said he felt that “Help!” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” were his most honest compositions and not just songs “written to order.”

What did The Beatles say about "Help!"?
Genius Answer

John Lennon has been very open and direct about the song’s meaning:

Most people think it’s just a fast rock & roll song. Subconsciously, I was crying out for help. I didn’t realize it at the time; I just wrote the song because I was commissioned to write it for the movie.

More, he was eating

like a pig, drinking too much and smoking marijuana for breakfast… I don’t like the recording that much. We did it too fast, to try and be commercial.
