Lady Madonna Lyrics

[Bridge: Paul McCartney]
Tuesday afternoon is never ending
Wednesday morning papers didn't come
Thursday night your stockings needed mending
See how they run

[Verse 4: Paul McCartney]
Lady Madonna, children at your feet
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet

[Outro: Instrumental]

About

Genius Annotation

“Lady Madonna” is a single released by the Beatles in 1968, with its B-side track as “The Inner Light”.

Paul McCartney says the song works as a tribute to women everywhere, as it was inspired by a picture of an African woman suckling her kid, over the caption “Mountain Madonna.”

The Beatles recorded “Lady Madonna” at the same time they were recording the promotional film for this. In the video for this song, The Beatles are actually singing “Hey Bulldog” (for the most part). They went in to shoot “Lady Madonna” and John changed it at the last minute to “Hey Bulldog.” If you watch the video montage for “Lady Madonna” closely, there’s even footage from the Get Back sessions thrown in.

What did Paul McCartney say about this song?
Genius Answer

The original concept was the Virgin Mary, but it quickly became symbolic of every woman– the Madonna image but as applied to ordinary working-class women. ‘Lady Madonna’ was me sitting down at the piano trying to write a bluesy boogie-woogie thing. It reminded me of Fats Domino for some reason, so I started singing a Fats Domino impression. It took my voice to a very odd place.
