About

Genius Annotation

“Twist and Shout” was originally by The Top Notes in 1960; the band The Isley Brothers did a cover of it in 1962. The Beatles did a second cover of the song in 1963. This song was made popular by The Beatles with John Lennon’s diverse vocals, which for being the last track recorded in an exhausting day-long session show some wear and tear in his voice.

On their U.S tour, towards the end, John changed the lyrics from “Twist and shout” to “Pissed with gout” as at the hight of ‘Beatlemania’ the screams from their female fans drowned out their music. This was a little giggle between the lads although this problem with fans drowning out the music was a main factor in the end of The Beatles touring.

What did The Beatles say about "Twist and Shout"?
Genius Answer

John Lennon (Singer):

The last song nearly killed me. My voice wasn’t the same for a long time after; every time I swallowed it was like sandpaper. I was always bitterly ashamed of it, because I could sing it better than that; but now it doesn’t bother me.
You can hear that I’m just a frantic guy doing his best.

Paul McCartney:

There’s a power in John’s voice there that certainly hasn’t been equaled since. And I know exactly why– It’s because he worked his bollocks off that day. We left ‘Twist And Shout’ until the very last thing because we knew there was one take.
