Bertha Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I had a hard run
Running from your window
I was all night running, running, running
I wonder if you care?
I had a run-in
Run around and run down
Run around a corner
Run smack into a tree

[Chorus]
I had to move
Really had to move
That's why, if you please
I am on my bended knees
Bertha, don't you come around here anymore

[Verse 2]
Dressed myself in green
I went down to the sea
Try to see what's going down
Try to read between the lines
Had a feeling I was falling, falling, falling
Turned around to see
Heard a voice a-calling, calling, calling
You was coming after me
Back to me
[Chorus]
I had to move
Really had to move
That's why, if you please
I am on my bended knees
Bertha, don't you come around here anymore

[Verse 3]
Ran into a rainstorm
Ducked into a bar door
It was all night pouring, pouring rain
But not a drop on me
Test me, test me
Why don't you arrest me?

Throw me in the jail house
Until the sun goes down
Till it go down

[Chorus]
I had to move
Really had to move
That's why, if you please
I am on my bended knees
Bertha, don't you come around here anymore

About

Genius Annotation

One from the Dead’s repertoire which never really made it in the studio, Bertha is a favorite at shows. The eponymous “Bertha” has been rumored to be a big floor fan that was located in the Dead’s office. Robert Hunter has dispelled this rumor saying:

No, this was after the fact. I don’t know where that story … I think they started calling this fan in the office that would run around and try and catch everyone and cut their fingers off. They started calling it Bertha. But no, this is not true. Bertha, I think, is probably some vaguer connotation of birth, death and reincarnation. Cycle of existences, some kind of such nonsense like that. I wouldn’t be surprised, but then again, it might not be. I don’t remember.

So “Bertha” might be a play on the word birth.
