Produced by James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy under the moniker The DFA, the original version of this track was released in 2002 and featured a rough mix that the band hated and initially refused to release. After much convincing, the single was released on James and Tim’s own label DFA as a 12 inch single.
The track then was re-recorded for the band’s debut album and released as the lead single in 2003. The newer version was cleaner and featured more of a techno-based sound than the original. It was this version that the track started to generate massive buzz, which including appearances on David Letterman and Carson Daily.
The track proved influential, as it helped re-establish dance-punk and burned the gap between rock and dance music listeners. Justin Timberlake and Timbaland specifically named it as an influence on the track “SexyBack.
