Can’t You Hear Me Knocking Lyrics

[Part I]

[Intro]
(Yeah)

[Verse 1]
Yeah, you got satin shoes
Yeah, you got plastic boots
Y'all got cocaine eyes
Yeah, you got speed-freak jive, now

Can't you hear me knockin' on your window?
Can't you hear me knockin' on your door?
Can't you hear me knockin' down your dirty street?
Yeah

[Chorus 1]
Help me baby, ain't no stranger
Help me baby, ain't no stranger
Help me baby, ain't no stranger

[Verse 2]
Can't you hear me knockin'? Ah, are you safe asleep?
Can't you hear me knockin'? Yeah, down the gas light street, now
Can't you hear me knockin'? Yeah, throw me down the keys
Alright now

[Chorus 2]
Hear me ringing big bell tolls
Hear me singing soft and low
I've been begging on my knees

I've been kickin', help me please

[Vocal Outro]
Hear me prowlin'
(I'm gonna take you down)
Hear me growlin'
(Yeah, I've got flat-ten feet now, now, now, now)
Hear me howlin'
(And all, all around your street now)
Hear me knockin'
(And all, all around your town)

[Part II]

[Instrumental]

About

Genius Annotation

Legendary rock ‘n’ role opus by The Rolling Stones, the first half of the 7 minute track consists of the protagonist calling on someone – an ex girlfriend or a drug dealer – to let him inside. The second half is a long jam that has a jazz-rock feel to it, and features Bobby Keys' saxophone solo and afterward, Mick Taylor’s melodic lead guitar. The song doesn’t have a traditional chorus; the second appearance of the chorus melody contains completely different lyrics from the first.

Genius Answer

From Wikipedia:

Keith Richards said they didn’t plan the long instrumental jam; they had simply kept playing without realizing the tape was still rolling. After hearing the playback, they realized they’d recorded the jam. A happy accident for rock ‘n’ roll fans!

Mick Jagger said he included “a lot of vocals, harmonies” and vocal overlays because the key was too high for him and he was trying to hide the fact that he wasn’t hitting the notes well.
