Shakespeare’s Sister Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Young bones groan and the rocks below say
"Throw your skinny body down, son"
But I'm going to meet the one I love
So, please don't stand in my way
Because I'm going to meet the one I love
No, Mamma, let me go
[Verse 2]
Young bones groan and the rocks below say
"Throw your white body down"
But I'm going to meet the one I love
At last, at last, at last
I'm going to meet the one I love, la-de-da, la-de-da
No, Mamma, let me go
[Verse 3]
I thought that if you had an acoustic guitar
Then it meant that you were a protest singer
Oh, I can smile about it now but at the time, it was terrible
No, Mamma, let me go
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Young bones groan and the rocks below say
"Throw your skinny body down, son"
But I'm going to meet the one I love
So, please don't stand in my way
Because I'm going to meet the one I love
No, Mamma, let me go
[Verse 2]
Young bones groan and the rocks below say
"Throw your white body down"
But I'm going to meet the one I love
At last, at last, at last
I'm going to meet the one I love, la-de-da, la-de-da
No, Mamma, let me go
[Verse 3]
I thought that if you had an acoustic guitar
Then it meant that you were a protest singer
Oh, I can smile about it now but at the time, it was terrible
No, Mamma, let me go
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
About
Genius Annotation
“Shakespeare’s Sister” was released as a single in March 1985, and later appeared on the Louder Than Bombs compilation.
The title comes from Virginia Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own, where she imagines a fictional sister of Shakespeare called Judith, who — despite being as intelligent as her brother — would have no chance of getting the same education or recognition:
It would have been impossible, completely and entirely, for any woman to have written the plays of Shakespeare in the age of Shakespeare.
The song’s title in turn inspired the 90s pop rock duo Shakespears Sister.
The AV Club did a write-up of the song for a Hear This feature.
