We’re Going to Be Friends Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Fall is here, hear the yell
Back to school, ring the bell
Brand new shoes, walking blues
Climb the fence, books and pens

I can tell that we are gonna be friends
I can tell that we are gonna be friends

[Verse 2]
Walk with me, Suzy Lee
Through the park and by the tree
We will rest upon the ground
And look at all the bugs we found
Safely walk to school without a sound

Safely walk to school without a sound

[Verse 3]
Here we are, no one else
We walk to school all by ourselves
There's dirt on our uniforms
From chasing all the ants and worms
We clean up and now it's time to learn
We clean up and now it's time to learn

[Verse 4]
Numbers, letters, learn to spell
Nouns and books, and show and tell

Playtime, we will throw the ball
Back to class, through the hall
Teacher marks our height against the wall
Teacher marks our height against the wall

[Bridge]
And we don't notice any time pass
We don't notice anything

We sit side by side in every class
Teacher thinks that I sound funny
But she likes the way you sing

[Verse 5]
Tonight I'll dream, while I’m in bed
When silly thoughts go through my head

About the bugs and alphabet
And when I wake tomorrow, I'll bet
That you and I will walk together again

[Outro]
I can tell that we are gonna be friends
Yes, I can tell that we are gonna be friends

Genius Annotation

Off of The White Stripes' third album, White Blood Cells, “We’re Going to Be Friends” was a contrast to the garage rock and blues style that the White Stripes were known for. However, the song still shared the trait of simplicity regarding composition, arrangement and performance that was associated with the White Stripes as well. Easy lyrics and a soothing melody to accommodate the song’s simple story – a boy’s experience of his first days at school. The song has the feel of a lullaby, and to expand on this, the music video features Jack White singing the song to a sleeping Meg White:

Despite the song’s simple appearance, there are many interpretations and discussions of the song’s lyrics, such as the song possibly commentating on the three phases of life: birth, adulthood, death.

The piece also features a female character, Suzy Lee, whose name is also the title of a song in the band’s self-titled first album, The White Stripes.

“We’re Going To Be Friends” also gained national popularity as the cult classic film, Napoleon Dynamite, used the song for its opening title sequence, which can be seen on Vimeo here
