Hung Up on a Dream Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Well, I remember yesterday
Just drifting slowly through a crowded street
With neon darkness shimmering through the haze
A sea of faces rippling in the heat
And from that nameless changing crowd
A sweet vibration seemed to fill the air
I stood astounded, staring hard
At men with flowers resting in their hair

[Chorus]
A sweet confusion filled my mind
Until I woke up only finding
Everything was just a dream
A dream unusual of its kind
That gave me peace and blew my mind
And now I'm hung up on a dream

[Verse 2]
They spoke with soft, persuading words (Spoke with soft, persuading words)
About a living creed of gentle love (Gentle love)
And turned me on to sounds unheard (Turned me on to sounds unheard)
And showed me strangest clouded sights above (Gentle love)

Which gentle touched my aching mind (Gentle touched my aching mind)
And soothed the wanderings of my troubled brain (Gentle love)
Sometimes I think I'll never find (I think I'll never find)
Such purity and peace of mind again (Gentle love)
[Outro]
(Gentle love)
(Gentle love)

About

Genius Annotation

“Hung Up On A Dream” is the sixth track from the acclaimed album “Odessey and Oracle" by English rock band the Zombies, released in 1968. Also released as A-side of “Hung Up On A Dream”/“A Rose for Emily” single in 1969.

The lyrics of the track probably refer us to the “Summer of Love” – a unique event in mid-1967, when the peak heyday of hippie movement came. The main character kept idealized pure memories about it, as if he had just see all this in a beautiful dream. Now he seemed to «wake up» and realize how all these young ideas are unrealizable and naive, but nevertheless he still comes back to this memories again and again, realizing that he will never have such an experience in his life again.
