I Will Follow Lyrics

[Intro]
One two three four
I will follow

[Verse 1]
I was on the outside
When you said, you said you needed me
And I was looking at myself
I was blind, I could not see

[Verse 2]
A boy tries hard to be a man
His mother takes him by his hand
If he stops to think, he starts to cry
Oh, why?

[Chorus]
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow
I will follow

[Verse 3]
I was on the inside
When they pulled the four walls down
I was looking through the window
I was lost, I am found

[Chorus]
Walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow
I will follow

[Bridge]
Your eyes make a circle
I see you when I go in there
Your eyes
Your, your, your eyes
Your eyes, just give me
Your, your, your eyes

[Chorus]
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow

[Outro]
I will follow
I will follow
I will follow
I will follow

Bono’s mother, Iris Hewson, died on September 10, 1974, when Bono was fourteen years old. Her own father had died just a few days before, and shortly after his funeral, Iris had a brain hemorrhage that killed her.

In many ways, her death was the pivotal event of Bono’s life; certainly it was the pivotal event of his adolescence. As Niall Stokes puts it,

Bono remembers his adolescence as a time of psychological violence and ‘I Will Follow’ captures some of the drama of that era, the four walls coming down on top of the song’s narrator in an image that captures well the suburban claustrophobia that was returned to, almost obsessively, throughout the first album. But there is something else going on here: a sense of terror and confusion which runs deeper than the common crises of identity from which teenagers suffer."

Into the Heart, Thunder’s Mouth Press, 1997, p. 9

Bono would return to his mother’s death again and again in his lyrics for U2, probably most notably in the song “Lemon” and the album Songs of Innocence.

Genius Answer

Bono told Rolling Stone that this song is about agape love. The Greeks have many words for love: agape love is unconditional love, like the love for God. This is as opposed to erotic love (“eros”) and friendly love (“philia”). The interviewer then asked Bono if this song was about his mother and he agreed, but said that it could also be about God:

I didn’t really write lyrics in the beginning. There was just sketching. Emotional sketches of an emotional landscape. The song is about agape love. It is about unconditional love.

In a separate interview with Rolling Stone, Bono elaborated:

To be honest, I don’t remember that much about my mother. I forget what she looks like. I was fourteen or fifteen when she died, but I don’t remember. I wasn’t close to my mother or father. And that’s why, when it all went wrong – when my mother died – I felt a real resentment, because I actually had never got a chance …… to feel that unconditional love a mother has for a child. There was a feeling of that house pulled down on top of me, because after the death of my mother that house was no longer a home – it was just a house. That’s what ”I Will Follow” is about. It’s a little sketch about that unconditional love a mother has for a child: ”If you walk away, walk away I will follow,” and ”I was on the outside when you said you needed me/I was looking at myself I was blind I could not see.” It’s a really chronic lyric.
