Apartment Lyrics

[Verse 1]
After leavin' my apartment
I feel this cold inside me
It howls away all through the market
It calls your name

Hoh oh-oh
Hoh oh-oh

[Verse 2]
On my way to your apartment
I write for fear of silence
You carved a boat to sail my shadow
Now I walk alone
Hoh oh-oh oh
Alright, alri-i-ight
Ooh

[Chorus]
I hit the sidewalk
And this is how it starts
Hide in a raincoat
When things are fallin' apart

[Verse 3]
After leavin' your apartment
I hit the coast by nightfall
So sure to keep you dreamin'
You understood
Oh, I know you understood
Yes sir, it shows I was no good
Ah, ah, ah
Alright, alri-i-ight
[Chorus]
I hit the sidewalk
And this is how it starts
Hide in a raincoat
When things are fallin' apart

[Post-Chorus]
'Cause sooner or later
This is bound to stop

Genius Annotation

“Apartment” is a song written by Alternative rock band Young the Giant from their 2010 self-titled debut album. Released as a single on February 13th, 2012, it reached 26 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.

Vocalizing the lyrics in a poetic melody, lead singer Sameer Gadhia has the bitter confrontation of breaking up with his lover, despite having conflicting thoughts on their relationship, and whether he should really go through with it after all.

In an interview with Interviewer Magazine, Gadhia said:

“Apartment” is one of our fondest songs. It’s one of the first songs we ever recorded ourselves in demo version. We actually still have that demo version of “Apartment.” We really love it. It was right when we moved out of this beach house we were living in Newport; we were living together. We moved back home to our particular places. At this time, it was kind of a lull. It was two years ago, and we hadn’t gotten signed yet. We weren’t quite sure where we were going. I think the song reflects this muted somberness, but at the same time positivity. We still realized that we were doing what we wanted to do. We made the sacrifice to take time off, and we were ready to see it all the way through to wherever it took us. This song was about leaving our apartment for the beach. It was a very strong connection with us to memories of where we were living.
