Maroon was the fifth full-length studio album by Barenaked Ladies. While their previous album, Stunt, had reached No. 1 in North America, Maroon reached No. 1 in the band’s native Canada. In the US on its own, it sold over 1 million copies.
The album is best known for its singles Too Little Too Late, Pinch Me, Falling For The First Time.
The album was the first of the band’s to be released on DVD. However, the DVD only features audio of the songs, and not any of the music videos made for the singles of the album.
In 2020, Rhino Records announced a 20th Anniversary Edition, similar to their previous album Stunt. However, this album was only released for vinyl and digital, and not CD like Stunt was. The 20th Anniversary Edition also includes the B-sides of Maroon, as well as including the hidden track found in limited edition copies of Maroon, Hidden Sun, penned by keyboardist Kevin Hearn when he was recovering from leukemia in the hospital.
While a few of the tracks have the expected humourous tone of Barenaked Ladies, most of the songs take on much more mature subject matter than their later albums, such as political issues, and more innuendos in the love songs written for the album.
As a tradition with their previous studio albums, the band recorded the most high-energy track of the album, Humour of the SItuation, completely naked.
