The Sound of the Life of the Mind

Ben Folds Five

About “The Sound of the Life of the Mind”

‘The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind’ is the fourth album by piano-rock trio Ben Folds Five, and the first since their break up in 2000 and subsequent 2011 reformation.

The album was crowdfunded via PledgeMusic, as the reformed Ben Folds Five was unsigned. The campaign was incredibly successful.

The album artwork is a piece by contemporary artist Eric Joyner. His unique artworks focus on things he enjoys, namely, “donuts and robots.” The robot in the artwork, titled Submerged, emulates the pose of Auguste Rodin’s famous Le Penseur (pictured above).

The only single, ‘Do It Anyway,’ was eventually accompanied by a music video starring the puppets of Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock, alongside celebrities Rob Corddry, Anna Kendrick and Chris Hardwick.

The album was both a critical and commercial success. It marked the first time that Folds had placed on the top-ten of the Billboard 200.
