Heaven and Hell

Black Sabbath

About “Heaven and Hell”

This album is Black Sabbath’s first album without Ozzy Osbourne and their first with Ronnie James Dio. The album sold incredibly well, the best since Paranoid and Master of Reality. It peaked at #9 on the UK charts and #28 on the US charts.

The tracks are very different from previous Sabbath albums, seeing how Dio wrote most lyrics. The title track is one of the band’s most famous songs, which always played at Dio’s live concerts.

Ronnie James Dio called this album his favorite of all the albums he had ever worked on.

[…] it’s not just the music, it’s all the things that went together with it. You know; the reason it was made, how difficult it was to make it, the time it took, the people involved, the changes while we were doing it; that’s what made the difference, I think. It was an album, again, that started a cycle for hard-rock music, and I’m very proud of that.

“Heaven and Hell” Q&A

  • What have the artists said about the album?

After going through 11 months of frustration with Ozzy, Ronnie James Dio was a great addition to the band. He had a new way of looking at things, and it gave us a new approach. Ronnie was very excited about joining the band, but I think it was difficult for him to fill Ozzy’s shoes. We tried to make it as easy on Ronnie as we could because, even though we went out on a limb firing Ozzy, we believed in what we were doing—and it worked.
