About “Enema of the State”

Enema of the State is Blink-182’s third studio album and was released on June 1, 1999 through MCA Records. It’s their first release with drummer Travis Barker, who replaced original member Scott Raynor.

Beginning to stray away from their punk roots, the band collaborated with reputable punk-rock producer Jerry Finn, who played a pivotal role in creating the album’s contagiously-melodic pop-punk sound and bringing the genre to its mainstream peak.

Enema is widely regarded as iconic, as it has had great influence on countless bands in similar genres, such as Yellowcard, All Time Low, Fall Out Boy, and Real Friends. The album has sold over 15 million copies worldwide and continues to make several top album lists, including Rock Sound’s 51 Most Essential Pop Punk Albums of All Time and a #1 spot in Kerrang!’s 51 Greatest Pop Punk Albums Ever.

The album cover, which remains one of the most recognizable to date, features porn star Janine Lindemulder in a nurse costume. She’s seen prepping her gloved hand to deliver an enema—an apt pose considering the album’s title, which is a play on the phrase enemy of the state.

“Enema of the State” Q&A

  • What has the artist said about the album?

In a 2019 interview with Forbes, Mark Hoppus reflects back on the personal significance of Enema of the State:

‘Adam’s Song’ still resonates a lot with me. I still struggle with dark times and that song is a statement about that. Going back and replaying all these songs and relearning these songs I still feel like they’re a statement as relevant today as it was back then. I feel like Enema Of The State was really when Blink found its legs and found our sound with the addition of Travis. Jerry Finn being our producer really helped us focus and try and write great songs instead of just trying to write fast songs. And it felt like everybody was really firing. I look back to the rehearsal spot in San Diego we wrote this record in and everybody came in every single day with just throwing ideas out, “What about this? What about this?” And it was everybody’s best work at the same time. So I love it.
