The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me

Brand New

About “The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me”

The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me is the third studio album by alternative rock band, Brand New. It is also the third album to feature long-time collaborator Mike Sapone as a featured producer. The name of the album came from a conversation frontman Jesse Lacey was having with a friend about musician Daniel Johnston who suffers from schizophrenia. The phrase also has parallels with a quote by Alesiter Crowley, a British occultist that likewise claimed that “God and Satan fought for [his soul].”

Released in 2006, the album was counter to what would be considered the height of the new wave emo/pop-punk movement. Other contemporary bands were releasing music more aligned with the mainstream, such as Tales Told By Dead Friends, by Mayday Parade, and The Same Old Blood Rush With A New Touch, by Cute Is What We Aim For. Despite this departure—both from their existing material and the genre mainstays—the album gained an extremely loyal following and extremely positive reviews from publications such as Alternative Press and Pitchfork.

“The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me” Q&A

  • What have the artists said about the album?

In an archived interview with BBC UK, Jesse Lacey touched on the meaning of the title and where it came from:

BBC: The new album is called Devil And God Are Raging Inside Of Me. What does it mean?

Jesse: I don’t think the title was meant specifically for one idea, but more that it touched on the band and also certain things that were evident when you listen to it. It really came from a conversation I was having with a friend about a musician who got an illness which has a certain level of paranoia and schizophrenia, and it leans towards a spiritual thing, a battle between good and evil which is intriguing.

The phrase itself was pretty cool, and reading it somewhere else would be striking, so that was what drew me to it, but listening back to the album I realised how much it represents quiet and loud, the good and evil, but it also has a lot to do with faith and some spiritual aspects of the band.
