The Rising is Bruce Springsteen’s 12th album, written immediately after the September 11 attacks, although “My City of Ruins” was originally about Asbury Park, New Jersey and was written years prior.
Themes in The Rising deal primarily with thoughts and feelings surrounding the 9/11 attacks such as revenge and understanding, helplessness and perseverance, loneliness and communication, love and death, and in “Into The Fire,” the extraordinary courage of ordinary people under tragic circumstances.
The Rising is a very fitting name as 12 years after the attacks and 11 years after the album was released, the One World Trade Center finished construction, rising to 1,776 feet, making it the tallest building in the United States and the sixth tallest building in the world.
The Rising won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album
The Rising debuted at #1 on Billboard 200 and was positioned #34 at the end of the year. It also charted #1 in numerous countries like the UK and Germany.
