Chance’s rumoured fifth project was finally given a title in the music video for The Highs & The Lows. The initial rollout consisted of a series of singles, called “Writing Exercises”, which were (with the exception of Wraith), released along with the display of a specifically-commissioned art piece.

On June 17th 2022, Chance would reveal on his Twitter that the album would consist of 16 songs as well as reveal the first 4 songs.

The title is inspired by Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line, an initiative in the early 1900s to bring all black Americans back to settle in Africa. Chance’s writing exercise #2 features very heavy reference to African land and ocean liners, while his trip to Ghana at the start of 2022 was also a sure inspiration for his embracing of the concept. The accompanying pieces are all created by black artists.

The title of the album and nature of the art pieces suggests that there may be a physical experience associated with the rollout in future.
