Attack on Memory is the acclaimed sophomore effort of Ohio noise rock outfit Cloud Nothings. It was released on January 24th 2012 via Carpark Records, supported by the singles “No Future/No Past”, “Fall In” and “No Sentiment”. Notably, the album was engineered by Steve Albini, producer of In Utero by Nirvana.
The record marked a stylistic change for Cloud Nothings, as frontman Dylan Baldi expressed boredom with the group’s previous attempts at power pop. He has also cited several rock influences during the making of the album:
While I was writing the songs that would become Attack On Memory, I listened almost exclusively to music that was made before I was born. This is a pretty common practice for me, actually, but I took it to a new level while making the record. I more or less memorized every guitar solo on the best Thin Lizzy albums, listened to only Wipers for about 3 weeks, and fell asleep to Black Sabbath every night.
Attack on Memory was very well received critically, and is usually cited as the group’s best album.
