About “Uncanny Valley”

Their most experimental album as of its release, Uncanny Valley is indie band, COIN’s, fourth LP.

Lead singer, Chase Lawrence, first teased the album on October 14, 2021. On January 25, 2022, he followed up with:

this album is meant to be listened to top to bottom so if you don’t like a single … see you on release day because this album is life giving in sequence

An Instagram account titled “The Committee for Sound & Mind” was created in promotion of the album. On February 10, 2022, COIN uploaded a video teasing the album’s influence by the digital world, which led to the website goodmorninguser.com. Once the site loads, it shows sixteen icons. Fourteen of the icons represents a track on the album and when clicked, plays a sound from said song. The bottom right two are related to the album’s title.

The band revealed the album’s title along with a message saying “WELCOME TO THE BEAUTIFUL PLACE” five days after the video upload. Three days later, they revealed the tracklist.

Uncanny Valley was preceded by the release of singles “Chapstick,” on October 8, 2021, “Cutie,” on January 28, 2022, “I Think I Met You In A Dream” on February 18, and “Brad Pitt” on March 11.

“Uncanny Valley” Q&A

  • What have the artists said about the album's sound?

The idea was to take the elements of classic rock—the organic instrumentation and energy of drums and guitar and bass—then put all that through a very hi-fi and modern filter. We wanted to make people feel like they’ve opened a door to the future, and heard a combination of sounds they weren’t supposed to hear yet.

Uncanny Valley is an AI inspired tour of **** music—a projection of what could have been, repurposing familiar instrumental palettes & organic synthesis through a modern, hi-fidelity lens.

  • What have the artists said about the album's title?

…so much of the core of the album is this kind of living in this uncomfort, which is the idea of Uncanny Valley, too. It’s something that looks so human and so familiar, but feels just a little bit off.
