Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy

Elton John

About “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy”

Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, released in 1975, is Elton John’s ninth studio album. It serves as an autobiographical account of the early musical careers of Elton John (Captain Fantastic) and Bernie Taupin (the Brown Dirt Cowboy). About the order of the track listing, John said:

“The album was written in running order – from start to finish, it was a story – and at that point, the bravest album I’d made.”

Captain Fantastic debuted at number 1 on the US Billboard 200, and was the first album to do so. It stayed in that position for seven weeks.
It also debuted at number 1 in Canada, and only broke a run of what would have been fifteen consecutive weeks at the top by falling to number 2 in the ninth week. On the UK Albums Chart, it peaked at number 2. In 2003, the album was ranked number 158 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
