In 1994, Dave Grohl decided to record all those songs he wrote while in Nirvana as a cathartic experience. For six days in Seattle’s Robert Lang Studios, he grouped with producer Barrett Jones and did all the instruments by himself – aside from a guitar by The Afghan Whigs‘ Greg Dulli as he visited the studio. He labeled it “Foo Fighters” so one would think it was a band instead of what could attract attention, a project by the guy from Nirvana. The 100 cassettes distributed to Grohl’s friends attracted label attention, and once a deal was signed Grohl picked up a full Foo Fighters band to tour.
