About “Marauder”

Marauder is Interpol’s sixth studio LP and follows the release of 2014’s El Pintor which achieved critical acclaim.

During a press conference which took place in Mexico City, Paul Banks said the name “Marauder” comes from a character which appears in a number of the songs. One song Paul said this character appears in is “Stay in Touch”.

Marauder sees lyricist Paul Banks being more autobiographical than he was abstract on past releases such as Turn On the Bright Lights and Antics.

Paul during the press conference in Mexico City:

This record is where I feel touching on real things that have happened to me are exciting and evocative to write about…. I think in the past, I always felt autobiography was too small a thing for me to reference. I feel like now, I’m able to romanticize parts of my own life.

To add to the previous statement from Paul, he also said:

I think there’s also maybe some themes involving accountability and looking at yourself, maybe not from such a totally abstract point of view lyrically[…]

  • What have the artist said about the album?

In a press release, vocalist Paul Banks said:

Marauder is a facet of myself. That’s the guy that fucks up friendships and does crazy shit. He taught me a lot, but it’s representative of a persona that’s best left in song. In a way, this album is like giving him a name and putting him to bed.
