Pearl

Janis Joplin

About “Pearl”

Considered an essential in blues-rock, Janis Joplin’s explosive second studio album (released posthumously) provided some of the most soulful tunes of her time, and cemented her as a rock icon only months after her passing.

While Joplin’s debut, I Got Dem Old Kozmic Blues Again, Mama!, had the passion needed for a blues record, its production was stripped down to that of a live album, lowering the overall quality of her work. Pearl ended up being much more polished and it’s final product received special treatment that gave it much more shine. Janis likely hadn’t intended to do this, but her label was already pushing towards a more refreshing sound. Producer Paul Rothchild also contributed his talents, crafting a heavier sound into the album.
