Jimmy Eat World returned to recording partially on tape for Damage, as they hoped to have a more raw sounding record. They were more concerned with getting the performance showcased appropriately than ensuring that each part was perfectly done. Lead singer Jim Adkins noted:

I would describe it as an attempt at making an adult breakup record.
