Chemtrails Over the Country Club

Lana Del Rey

About “Chemtrails Over the Country Club”

Chemtrails Over the Country Club is Lana’s seventh studio album. With Jack Antonoff, as the returning producer from Lana’s previous record, Norman Fucking Rockwell!, Chemtrails features subtle instrumentals, somber vocals, and the manifold references to classic Americana she is best known for.

The record was originally mentioned by Lana in an August 2019 interview with The Times where it was referred to as White Hot Forever.

I’ve already written parts of it […] It’s called White Hot Forever. I feel like it probably will be a surprise release sometime within the next 12 or 13 months.

In an interview with Q magazine on the October 2019 issue, Lana talked about a song she was working on called “Let Me Love You Like A Woman”, also adding the inspiration behind the record and mentioning that she allegedly scrapped the original title of the album.

I only think of star signs because it’s what comes up in my writing for the next thing I’m doing […] I just don’t know how long it’s going to take. I have the same thing for this next album but it’s actually going to take longer than I want if it’s going to be as good as [Norman Fucking Rockwell!] […] This next album may come in 2020, it may come in 2021, and it may be called White Hot Forever, or may change my mind.

On May 21st, 2020 via Instagram, Lana mentioned the album will be release on September 5th and will include references to her personal life and critics about culture, expressed on her lengthy post about double standards for women in the music industry:

I’m sure there will be tinges of what I’ve been pondering in my new album

On May 25th, Lana confirmed the official title of the record with a short album trailer.

On September 1st, Lana revealed she was filming the music video for the title track and that before it was released she would drop a single named “Let Me Love You Like A Woman”.

Lana declared in a September 2020 interview from Interview magazine:

It makes me anxious listening to it, because I know it’s going to be a hard road to get to where I want to be, to do what I want to do. A lot of that’s going to involve writing classes and being uncomfortable in new places with not many friends and raising my dogs and my cats and my chickens alone. It’s going to be work. I hear Chemtrails and I think “work,” but I also think of my stunning girlfriends, who so much of the album is about, and my beautiful siblings. “Chemtrails” is the title track because it mentions them all and it mentions wanting so much to be normal and realizing that when you have an overactive, eccentric mind, a record like Chemtrails is just what you’re going to get.

On November 3, 2020, Lana took to an Instagram live to announce that, due to manufacturing delays, the record had to be delayed by 16 weeks, giving it a new tentative release date of early 2021. To make up for the delay, she also revealed she would release a project of covers before 2020 ended:

Chemtrails Over the Country Club, right… 16-week delay on the vinyl process so in the meantime I’m going to give you a digital record. American Standards and Classics for Christmas. Because I can’t get the record plants to open until March 5. […] I was stressed out when I found out about the production taking 16 to 17 weeks. It is what it is, but in the mean time, I have some Patsy Cline songs I’ve been wanting to cover for a long time, and some Americana songs I’ve done with Nikki Lane.

On December 22, Lana announced that the album would be available for pre-order on January 11th alongside its lead single of the same name.

I’ve been really stressed about this album. From the top, we knew what Norman was. But with Chemtrails, it was like, ‘Is this new folk? Oh, god, are we going country?’ Now that it’s done I feel really good about it, and I think a defining moment for this album will be ‘White Dress/Waitress.'

As it happens when it comes to my amazing friends and this cover yes there are people of color on this records picture and that’s all I’ll say about that, but thank you. My beautiful friend Valerie from Del Rio Mexico, my dearest friend Alex and my gorgeous friend Dakota Rain as well as my sweetheart Tatiana. These are my friends this is my life. We are all a beautiful mix of everything- some more than others which is visible and celebrated in everything I do. In 11 years working I have always been extremely inclusive without even trying to. My best friends are rappers my boyfriends have been rappers. My dearest friends have been from all over the place, so before you make comments again about a WOC/POC issue, I’m not the one storming the capital, I’m literally changing the world by putting my life and thoughts and love out there on the table 24 seven. Respect it.
