Live: Take No Prisoners

Lou Reed

About “Live: Take No Prisoners”

Live: Take No Prisoners is the third live album by Lou Reed, released in November, 1978, several months after the release of his positively reviewed studio album, Street Hassle- which was praised for being “brilliant”, and “the best solo album Lou Reed has ever done” according to Rolling Stone Magazine critic Tom Carson.

Taking on the punk attitude which was heavily shown in Street Hassle, Reed applied it to this album, by joking and mocking the crowd in between songs, and even pointing out fellow musician Bruce Springsteen, who was in the crowd during one of the shows.

According to Reed, the album’s working title was Lou Reed Talks, And Talks, And Talks, as a joke because of his quiet nature, but retitled it to Live: Take No Prisoners because “‘…this drunk guy sitting alone at the front shouts, "LOU!! MAN!! TAKE NO PRIS'NERS, LOU!!”’“ during a set in Quebec.

The album was recorded using binaural technology, being one of the first albums to ever be released with binaural sound. Reed was also the first to ever release a binaural sound pop album: Street Hassle.
