Made up by two different periods of recording sessions (side one features records ranging from ‘74 to '77 while side two from the early '80) Hawks & Doves is Neil Young’s tenth studio album. Released on Monday, November 3, 1980, the day before the 1980 United States presidential election.
In a 1995 interview, Young commented,
Well, it’s what you might call a transitional album for me. But that’s not to say there aren’t some really interesting things on there. “Comin' Apart At Every Nail” is good and I really like “Union Man”. It’s no big thing: just a funky little record that represents where I was at and what I was doing at that time.
