About “Summer Songs”

Neil Young’s Summer Songs are a collection of demos that were recorded some time in 1987. All of the playing and singing are by Young. Every song but one would later be recorded and released on various albums, sometimes with altered lyrics:

1988 CSN&Y American Dream: “American Dream”, “Name of Love”
1989 Freedom: “Wrecking Ball”, “Someday”, “Hangin' on a Limb”
1992 Harvest Moon: “One of These Days”
2012 Psychedlic Pill: “For the Love of Man”

The one exception is “Last of His Kind”, which has been performed live at Farm Aid but never released on a recording.

Summer Songs was released on Christmas Day 2021 for streaming only as a gift to subscribers of neilyoungarchives.com. These recordings are also slated for inclusion in Neil Young Archives Volume III which is targeted for release in 2022.
