About “Cats Don’t Dance (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)”

Cats Don’t Dance is a 1997 American animated musical comedy produced by Turner Feature Animation and distributed by Warner Bros. Family Entertainment. It is notable as being the final movie that Gene Kelly choreographed before his death in 1996 – the movie is dedicated to him.

The movie takes place in 1937 during “The Golden Age of Hollywood”. Talkies – movies with synchronized sound – helped Hollywood to firmly secure a place as one of the world’s most powerful commercial and cultural centers.
Danny, a cat from Kokomo, dreams of becoming a Hollywood star and travels there to seek his fame and fortune. He is chosen, alongside some other animals, to star in a movie called L'il Ark Angel which features the studio’s star actress Darla Dimple. Danny is upset to find that the animals only have minor parts so he decides to show off to the cameras instead of just saying his one line. This enrages Darla, and Danny finds out that human actors are given the most important and starring roles and animals are generally in the background – the animals are dismayed at this, but accept it as being the industry standard.
Danny, from then on, decides to try and get the animals' talents noticed by the studio, to the absolute disgust of Darla.

The movie’s songs were composed by Randy Newman and the score by Steve Goldstein. The movie’s songs take cues from the elaborate and grand musical films of the era, which in turn were a development of musical theater.
