Released October 19, 1993, Counterparts is the fifteenth studio album from Rush. It continues the band’s modernization and transition from a synth/keyboards driven sound to Alex Lifeson’s guitar riffs leading the songs sound. Because of this, Counterparts genre is mainly hard rock, influenced by bands like Primus and even a grunge representative like Pearl Jam.
On Counterparts, Rush tried to achieve a kind of “balance between spontaneity and refinement”. Some keyboard elements from previous albums were maintained – despite Alex’s disapproval -, but Geedy Lee justified the inclusion only to “embellish the songs”.
