Released in November 21st, 1989, Presto marks another shift in Rush’s music: the previous album – Hold Your Fire (1987) – was the last album that would featured a more synth/keyboards-driven sound.
Presto was the first attempt since 1981 Moving Pictures, to return to Alex’s guitar leading the songs.
Before the recording of Presto, the band decided to take a six-month break, since they were “free of deadlines and obligations” for the first time in fifteen years. In December 1988, Rush gathered at Peart’s house to decide what the next step would be, then they agreed to record a new studio album after the break.
