Hospice

The Antlers

About “Hospice”

Hospice holds a pivotal position in The Antler’s career, being their third studio release and a transformative departure in sound. The conceptual narrative follows a hospice worker’s relationship with a terminally ill patient, while being an allegory for a toxic relationship. The extent to which this subtext is autobiographical is unknown, however, it is theorized that at least some of it is based off of the end of real relationship from frontman Peter Silberman. The album’s dreamy, atmospheric sound, blending ambient post-rock and indie folk, is enhanced by Silberman’s falsetto vocals, adding a layer of vulnerability.

Originally a solo project recorded in Silberman’s bedroom during a period of self-isolation, Hospice evolved into a full-band collaboration with the addition of Michael Lerner and Darby Cicci. While not the band’s debut, it stands out as their most critically acclaimed work, garnering attention for its emotionally charged lyrics and ethereal melodies. Meticulously crafted, the album has left an indelible mark on the indie rock scene.
