This is the first installment in a set of three compilation albums released by the surviving Beatles members, beginning in November 1995. These double albums accompanied a TV mini-series titled The Beatles Anthology, originally aired on ABC in America and ITV in the UK.
Each collection captures a different era of The Beatles' history, approximately in chronological order—although, the opening track, titled “Free as a Bird,” is a posthumous reworking of a late John Lennon demo originally recorded in 1977. The second track is a snippet taken from Lennon’s 1971 Rolling Stone interview, which segues into the first two songs ever recorded by The Beatles, back when they were still called The Quarrymen: 1958’s “That’ll Be the Day” and “In Spite of All the Danger.”
Aside from the plethora of unreleased material that follows, along with vocal segments taken from The Beatles' early days, Anthology 1 consists mostly of songs from their first four official studio albums: 1963’s Please Please Me and With The Beatles, as well as 1964’s A Hard Day’s Night and Beatles for Sale.
