The Kinks Present a Soap Opera, or simply Soap Opera, is the 14th studio album by The Kinks.
The album’s concept tells the story of a fame-obsessed rock star named Starmaker who changes lives with an ordinary man named Norman in order to better understand the life of the “ordinary people”, so he can write better songs. Starmaker introduces himself to Norman’s wife Andrea and begins living with her.
The next morning he goes to work and gets caught in the rush hour. He works from 9 to 5 before visiting the bar for a few drinks. He slowly begins to find enjoyment in the simpler lifestyle, having a romance with a woman on a holiday trip, and genuinely falling in love with his wife.
By the end of the album, Starmaker’s lost most of his rock star persona and starts seriously considering abandoning his music career altogether to continue his simple life with Andrea. He finally decides to do so after understanding that, although his career may die, his music will live on.
