About “Head”

The soundtrack to The Monkees‘ psychedelic movie Head, the album features six full-length songs mixed with dialogue and sound effects from the film.

The album features compositions by both Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, plus contributions by outside writers Carole King, Harry Nilsson, and more. Other popular musicians such as Stephen Stills guest on certain tracks.
This record’s original issue features a reflective front cover, meant to act as a mirror and reflect the listener’s head/face back at them. Manufacturing the covers using this material (aluminized PET film) proved problematic, and later reissues used either a foil cover or a plain, nonreflective grey one.
Head charted on the US Billboard 200, peaking at #45 and remaining in the top 200 for 15 weeks. It was later ranked #25 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 25 Greatest Soundtracks of All Time” in 2013.
