All Hail West Texas

The Mountain Goats

About “All Hail West Texas”

All Hail West Texas was released on February 19, 2002. It is the sixth full-length studio album by The Mountain Goats and is the last album recorded using band leader John Darnielle’s beloved Panasonic RX-FT500, whose background hisses and whirrings contribute so much to the sound of this album in particular that it could be considered an honorary member of the band.

According to the liner notes, this album contains:

fourteen songs about seven people, two houses, a motorcycle, and a locked treatment facility for adolescent boys.

It was reissued on July 23, 2015 with remastered versions of the original recordings and seven previously unreleased bonus songs.

In the fall of 2017, the podcast network Night Vale Presents released a podcast called I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats. The first season looks at one track of this album per episode, discussing the writing process among other things. Each episode also features a cover of that episode’s song by another artist, before which that artist joins the conversation.
