Taking the Dative

The Mountain Goats

About “Taking the Dative ”

Taking The Dative is the fifth cassette-only release by the Mountain Goats, released by Car in Car Disco Records in 1994. The cassette in its entirety appeared on their 1999 compilation Ghana alongside several other reissues.

Most other the Mountain Goats cassettes released were also reissued around this time. The only exception being The Hound Chronicles and Hot Garden Stomp, which were rereleased in 2012; and Taboo VI: The Homecoming, which was never rereleased.

“Taking the Dative ” Q&A

  • Does the cassette have bonus tracks?

Taking the Dative has at least one bonus track. Unlike the bonus tracks on Transmissions to Horace, though, this bonus track has not yet been publicly discovered.

In a discussion about the Transmissions to Horace bonus tracks on the now-defunct Mountain Goats forum, John Darnielle commented the following on 17 September 2013:

Still at large in the wild and unspotted to date as far as know [sic] are the early copies of Taking the Dative where Joel did as Peter’d did here and just put some extra songs on the end, stuff that he had on the tape I sent him but which I didn’t consider part of the release; I don’t remember what-all was on them, I don’t have a copy myself, but there was a song called “8 to 20 On A Weapons Charge."
